Stylist tips: How to style yellow

Now that the sun has finally shown its beautiful rays (sometimes even too much)… it’s time to start looking at your wardrobe and thinking which pieces you have to match the gorgeous rays of light. If you don’t have any and need to shop for new clothes, we highly recommend yellow.

Yellow is a very hot colour this Season. Whether in a more neon or a more pale look, it’s definitely a must-have tone for this Summer. There are lots of yellow items in the high street catalogues. Whether in skirts, dresses, tops, trousers, to accessories like bags, clutches, jewellery, and even shoes. We love them all equally….

However, since yellow is such a bright, cheerful, tone, it can also give some headaches when it comes to styling. Which colours can you match it with? Can you wear it with neutral colours without it looking dull or boring?

To answer some of these questions, our fashion stylists put together some outfit ideas to help you go through your style dilemmas. If you have any other questions about style and styling, please ask our stylists in our facebook page (they’ll reply as soon as possible).

Colour Wheel: Mix & Match Yellow

If you need some extra help on how to pull off an outfit based on yellow, here are some extra tips on which colours match best.

The first thing you need to know when you’re trying to mix colours is that there’s something called the “color wheel” (see image below) that will help you figure out which colours match best with each other. This basically works like this:

Image from Wikipedia
  • The closer the colour is in the wheel, the easier is to match. These are called analogous colours.  In this case, yellow is right next to lemon-yellow and orange yellow, and you’ll find that these two tones are pretty easy to match with pure yellow. If you match in between (or near) those colours, you’ll be fine and it will look great.
  • Colours can be matched based on a complimentary theory. The opposite tone in the wheel is called complimentary. In this case it’s violet. So, violet is the complimentary colour of yellow.
  • Split complimentary. One colour plus the two colours on the other side. For yellow it’s the blue violet/blue and purple.

There are other forms of mix and matching tones. These “rules” apply not just to fashion, but to everything else. Please keep in mind that, like any other rules, they can be broken and they're just guidelines. These were just some simple tips on how to match yellow. If you want to know more about it, read this.
