Stylist tips: Essentials to Pack for a Holiday

Are you guilty of packing five of everything when you go on holiday..and then wearing the same pair of shorts and flip flops every day? That makes about a million of us.

To try and avoid this, I’ve put together a list of staple pieces to get you through any beach holiday in style.. and hopefully leave room in your case to bring back all the inevitable purchases of shell bracelets and sarongs!

For Day

1. You’ll probably be spending a lot of time in your bikini, so it’s important to take some that fit and flatter you and make you feel comfortable. The polka dot one (Topshop) is classic and feminine, and the ruffles help to flatter hips. The red ruffled one (River Island) is more of a statement and is great for boosting small busts.

2. A kimono is great for covering up your bikini during the day, choose one that sits mid thigh to make you feel covered up enough for when you go for lunch. (River Island)

3. Denim shorts are a key piece for beach holidays, you can slip them over a bikini for day and combine them with a vest for any activities you do. (Topshop)

4. Plain tops are incredibly useful, wear them with your denim shorts during the day and you can also add some glamour by mixing them with jewellery and more statement pieces in the evening. (Boohoo)

5. A good day bag should hold the essentials and ideally be able to click shut, to stop pesky fingers from slipping in unnoticed. (H&M)

6. Retro and statement sunglasses are going to be huge this summer, choose cat-eye shapes or go all out with embellished frames. (River Island)

For Evening

1. Bracelets in neutral colours that you can stack and mix-and-match are a great way of changing up your evening look without having to pack a lot of jewellery. (All Topshop)

2. Take a glamorous evening dress that shows off your tan and makes you feel summery. Be bold and pick one in a bright colour or pattern. (Styling Up)

3. A statement necklace is great for layering over your plainer tops or dresses to make you look more dressed up. (Topshop)

4. Let’s be honest, no one really wears high heels on holiday, so take some mid-height, neutral wedges that go with all of your evening items and are easy and comfortable to walk in. (Dorothy Perkins)

5. Take a few luxe vests and strappy tops for evening, you can combine them with just about any bottoms you’ve brought to create a variety of mix and match looks. Good details to look for are embellishments, sequins and statement prints. (Topshop)

6. A sparkly evening clutch will make any look glamorous, even if paired with denim shorts and a pretty vest. (Miss Selfridge)

7. Nothing says holiday like a maxi dress, so get one you love. They’re great for the first few evenings of holiday, when you want to look summer and dress comfortably, but your legs haven’t really picked up a tan yet. (Dorothy Perkins)

Mix and Match

These are the hero items that will take you effortlessly from beach-to-dinner-to-bar.

1. An amazing swimsuit will work for day, and also as a top when worn under your denim shorts or skirts. (H&M)

2. Statement, silky joggers can be worn with sandals for day, then glammed up with some wedges when the sun goes down. (Dorothy Perkins)

3. A white shirt is a great basic item for holidays. It can be worn open to cover up your bikini during the day, or with any shorts or skirts. (H&M)

4. A cover-up that’s a proper dress is great, you can wear it over a bikini while you’re out during the day and then you’re ready for the beach later. Add your wedges and it’s also great for evening. (Topshop)

5. A statement skirt should ideally go with all of your tops, so that you can wear it day or night. Go for a pattern with a lot of different colours (like floral patterns) to give it a greater range of potential matches. (Topshop)

6. A sparkly crop top is great for evening (with your statement skirt) or good for glamming up a day outfit, by pairing it with denim shorts.(Topshop)

7. A pair of not-so-plain sandals. I know you’ll probably still wear flip-flops every day, but a pretty pair of sandals are easy to wear during the day and are dressed up enough for evening. (Topshop)
Hopefully these pieces will see you through your holiday easily, and leave you only worrying about what cocktail flavour to try next! It’s very eighties..but I’d recommend a Pina Colada. Happy Holidays!
